How to Avoid SUMMER Burnout 🔥 — 🌿with Ayurvedic Wisdom
Summer is a season of sun, energy, and activity — but it’s also when burnout can sneak up on us.
Summer is the time for BBQs, outdoor activities, time with family & friends. It starts great but somewhere the FOMO or fear of disappointing leads to – More social plans. More travel. More work to squeeze in before vacation. More pressure to make the most of those long summer days.
The long days, constant stimulation, and pressure to “do it all” can leave even the most vibrant person feeling depleted.
And before we know it, the season that’s supposed to energize us leaves us feeling irritable, restless, tired, or simply… done.
According to Ayurveda (5,000 yr old Ancient System of Healing), Summer is governed by ‘Pitta’ (Fire + Water elements) dosha, the energy of heat, transformation, and drive.
When Pitta is in balance, we feel focused, confident, and energized.
But when it’s aggravated (hello, heatwaves and overcommitment), it can lead to irritability, inflammation, exhaustion, and burnout.
Let’s explore how to stay cool — physically, mentally, and emotionally — according to your unique ‘Dosha’.
In Ayurveda, there’s a simple principle:
Like increases like, and opposites bring balance.
When something becomes too hot, we cool it. When we feel scattered, we ground. When we feel heavy, we create movement.
Balance begins by gently bringing in what’s opposite to bring back to balance.
☀️ If you are a ‘Pitta’ (Fire 🔥) Dominant: Cool the ‘Fire’
You’re naturally driven, focused, passionate — and you probably know how to get things done.
But summer heat + a busy schedule + your natural drive can sometimes turn that inner fire into overdrive.
You might notice – Irritability, impatience, feeling overheated, skin sensitivity, acid reflux, inflammation, or feeling exhausted from constantly pushing forward.
Your Summer Vibe: Cool + Soft + Slow
🌿 Cool from the inside: Try refreshing foods and drinks such as mint, coriander, cucumber, coconut, or rose. Go a little easier on very spicy, fried, processed or heavy foods.
🧘🏽♀️ Create space: Put actual downtime on your calendar. Rest isn't something you earn after everything is done.
💧 Connect with water: A cool shower, swim, or time near a lake can be a simple way to help your whole system soften.
🌙 Slow down in the evening: Spend a few quiet minutes outdoors after sunset. Let your senses settle before moving into the next thing.
✨ Moon magic: Spend 10 minutes under the moonlight. It’s energetically calming. Also, avoid midday sun.
Pro Tip - Summer can be especially tough for ‘Pitta’ types, so take extra care during this season.
Your reminder:
You don't have to do it all or get more done, sometimes it’s more productive to slow down.
🌤 If you are a ‘Vata’ (Air 💨 ) Dominant: Ground the ‘Wind’
Vata is associated with air and space — light, mobile, creative, and constantly moving.
Summer can bring plenty of stimulation: travel, changing schedules, late nights, social plans and long days.
For Vata, all that movement can sometimes become too much.
You might notice – Feeling scattered, anxious, overwhelmed, dry, gassy, restless, or having trouble settling into sleep.
Your Summer Vibe: Ground + nourish
🥣 Choose nourishing foods: Think warm, cooked, moist and gently spiced meals rather than constantly grazing on cold or dry foods.
💧 Hydrate consistently: Don't wait until you're thirsty. Small, regular sips can be easier on the system than trying to catch up later.
🕰️ Keep a gentle rhythm: Regular meals, movement and bedtime can be incredibly grounding when life feels busy.
🌿 Move slowly: An evening walk, gentle yoga, stretching, or simply sitting in nature can help bring you back into your body.
Your reminder:
You don't need to keep up with life, allow life to catch up to you by getting steady.
🌤 If you are ‘Kapha’ (Earth 🌿) Dominant: Energize & Lighten
Kapha carries the qualities of earth and water — steady, grounded, nourishing and calm.
Summer can actually feel supportive for Kapha, but too much comfort, inactivity, or routine can sometimes lead to a sense of heaviness or stagnation.
You might notice – Low energy, sluggish digestion, heaviness, emotional withdrawal, or difficulty getting yourself moving.
Your Summer Vibe: Lighten + Energize + Move
🚶🏽♀️ Get moving early: A brisk morning walk, energizing yoga, or a few rounds of invigorating breathwork can help you start the day with momentum.
🌶️ Bring some warmth to your plate: Light, fresh meals with ginger, black pepper, leafy greens and other vibrant vegetables can feel supportive.
✨ Do something different: Take a new class. Try a creative hobby. Explore somewhere you've never been.
☀️ Use the cooler hours: Getting outside earlier in the day lets you enjoy movement before the summer heat builds.
Your reminder:
Sometimes the energy you’re waiting for comes after you begin moving.
